Stripping the Bed

It is not the first time I have changed the sheets since you left me.
Far from it.
But the last time
was automatic, robotic, tearful and detached.

Today, I took the sheets from the bed,
the pillows from their cases
and said goodbye.

Notes from you,
pictures of you
lay on the nightstand.

…my heart is forever yours…
…discover ourselves, each other, and the richness that is us…
…love the likes of which neither of us has nor will ever know again…

I have tucked them away now.

The sheets are waiting
to be washed of memory.

My heart hopes
yours will soften back to me one day,
And if it does,
that mine will want yours still.

A single tear –
just one –
marks
the clean sheets.

Quote of the Day:  “We fall in love when our imagination projects nonexistent perfection upon another person. One day, the fantasy evaporates and with it, love dies.” —  Jose Ortega y Gasset
