Today’s remembered loss is a tapestry that had hung in K’s bedroom since she was born. A woven blue piece depicting a giant white polar bear. Ex-Pat and I bought it at a little store we liked in Bergen Park. He named him Mike.

I wasn’t sure about having giant polar bear hanging on the pale yellow wall of my little daughter’s room. I didn’t want him to scare her. But it was just the opposite. Her bed was right beneath him for years and she told me that he helped chase away her bad dreams. He was her defender. Her protector.

I hate to think of him going up in flames with the rest of the precious things on her walls. It breaks my heart. But I’m on the hunt now to find Mike again. After 25 years, it will be a challenge. One worth working for.
