Not all who wander are lost applies particularly to me.

Outside of Gunnison, Colorado.

Daily gratitudes:

  • MKL
  • Adventure Days
  • Setting up house
  • Rain
  • Planting

The rooftop bar at La Fonda Hotel is scorching in the summer at cocktail time, so they have been most considerate in putting up canopies that shield the sun while unveiling the sky. We have had enough hot in our western world in the month of July, and while I would never expect to hear myself say it, I am looking forward to cooler weather. If I must be hot, then let me be by a beach. Soon.

Quote of the day: “We love easily in summer, perhaps, because we love our summer selves.” — John Updike

Daily gratitudes:
The look in MKL’s eyes and reassurance of his presence
Kelsea and early adult heartache
My bracelet from Tam
Random exercise
A suspected new comrade

It has been a beautiful weekend for so many reasons, starting with this lovely peony that transformed itself as it bloomed. So much more to come!

Quote of the day: “I want to try with someone who loves me enough to try with me. I want to grow old looking at the same face every morning. I want to grow old looking at the same face every night at the dinner table. I want to be one of those old couples you see still holding hands and laughing after fifty years of marriage. That’s what I want. I want to be someone’s forever.” — Rachel Gibson

Daily gratitudes:
Road trips
Cottonwood Hot Springs

I love shooting reflections. At the Hot Air Balloon Rodeo, they usually do a dip and drag in the lake, but conditions were warming up too fast this year, so only one or two balloons accepted the challenge.

Quote of the day: “Reflect upon your present blessings — of which every man has many — not on your past misfortunes, of which all men have some.” — Charles Dickens

Daily gratitudes:
That Bridget’s dad is such a remarkable fighter
The Voodoo Donut fairy
That the passive-aggressive postman did NOT leave my package of paper in a puddle

We have reached a high of 14 today, as warm as it has been in days and days. Perhaps I’ll put on a sarong and flip-flops. Or perhaps not. I am curled up on the couch today, battling a migraine, and watching football players do amazing things in the eastern snow, backing up my computer, and snuggling with Mr. Man. I am warmed today by the memory this image conjures up for me, of driving back from a Labor Day with Kelsea, when we stopped somewhere between South Dakota and Wyoming, at this turn to nowhere surrounded by nothing but sunflowers, and we hugged in such a way that it is imprinted on my soul. If that hug were the last memory I summoned before I left this earthly plane, I would be happy.

Quote of the day: “Hope and courage and risk dwell inside of us on an uncharted island and if we learn to look for it and tap into it, our possibilities are endless.” — Katie Kacvinsky

Daily gratitudes:
Deep sleep (despite the dreams)
Quiet days
Migraine medicine
Safe travels for beloved friends

The annual Steamboat Springs Hot Air Balloon Rally is coming up next month, and I’m already looking forward to it. It means getting up super early, but it’s worth it. Although Kelsea might disagree. We do always enjoy trying to chase the balloons as they land in random places – it’s a fun game of hide and seek.

Daily gratitudes:
Spending time with Kelsea

Cool air today
Louis the new chicken pillow
Trusting MKL enought to sing in front of him (after a tot of rum)

Today we have our first “official” fire of the season, in the Evergreen/Conifer area, which we just drove through last weekend. Homes are being evacuated, and the hot, dry winds remind us all of how tenuous a tinderbox our lovely state can be. Let’s hope our brave and busy smokejumpers can get this one out quickly. It’s a small one right now, only five acres, but the winds can push it along faster than a car can drive.

Quote of the day: “And so with the sunshine and the great bursts of leaves growing on the trees, just as things grow in fast movies, I had that familiar conviction that life was beginning over again with the summer.” — F. Scott Fitzgerald

Daily gratitudes:
My ankle is slowly healing
Painted horses
Cold drinks

The Steamboat Springs Annual Hot Air Balloon Rodeo was cancelled this year due to the high fire danger that we experienced in Colorado this summer.  It would have been my fourth year, and Kelsea’s third. But it’s on (so far) for the weekend of July 13, 2013, and we’ll be there to capture more beauty – weather permitting.
